My Best Tips For Your Eye Makeup

When I apply makeup to a client the eye makeup takes up half of the makeup application time. For me the eyes will always be the focus of a captivating look and this is because we communicate so much through them. If you want to know how a person feels all you need to do is look into their eyes! That’s why they need special makeup attention 💗.  Now, sometimes putting less on your eyes works best, maybe you are comfortable with just mascara for an everyday, so it really depends on what you want, but again your eyes will always need something. What’s nice is that the market is constantly evolving with all kinds of eye shadows and eye makeup. However, this blog is not about what colors you should wear but instead what to consider before starting to create your eye makeup.

If you are a makeup enthusiast, I know how exciting it can be when you just bought that gorgeous eyeshadow palette but just bear with me and follow these useful tips before trying it on!

Tip #1

Always make sure your brushes are clean not only to keep your tools in good condition but to prevent infections in your skin. You will have cleaner eye makeup especially when you go from one color to the other without using the same dirty brush.

Four Types of Brushes

  1. Large blending brush, for all over placement, what you’ll notice on this brush it’s not very dense and its bristles are longer, it should be fluffy and loose to easily move around. This is the brush you will need to set the concealer and to apply the eyeshadow base.

  1. Crease blending brush is going to be good for blending color into the crease or for a more precise placement by going back and forth with a windshield wiper motion.

  1. Densely (flat) shader brush will be used to put color onto the eyelid. They are great to pack on color and to apply cream shadow. It can also be used to shade your bottom lash line.

  1. Smudger brush to apply shadow along your lash line. This brush is firm and soft at the same time to help you keep control while diffusing your pencil or gel eyeliner.

This brush can also be used to highlight your tear duct or brow bone.

Tip #2

Before applying any makeup is very important to prepare your skin, including the skin around the eyes, make sure your skin is clean by using a cotton pad with micellar water, and then use an eye cream to keep them moisturized, you only need a pea-sized amount which will cover both eyes.  Use your ring finger and dab gently around your orbital bone or the bony part that is around your eyes (orbicularis oculi muscle) Avoid going too close to your eye and give enough time for the eye cream to get absorbed.

Tip # 3

Don’t apply your eye cream to your upper lids and use the orbital bone as a guide, eyelids can be one of the oiliest parts of the face so it’s better to keep your eyelids oil free for your makeup to last most of the day.

Tip #4

I recommend you wear an eye primer or a concealer as a first step before applying the eyeshadow base. If you get this part right, you will have a long-lasting look.

Four Main Types of Shadows

  1. Base shade: Lightest shade in the palette, it is used all over the eyelid to set the concealer.

  1. Transition shade: It goes on the crease area to add dimension and depth. Slightly deeper than the base shade.

  1. Contour shade: This shade is darker than the transition color and it’s added to the outer corner of the eye and part of the crease with small circular motions.

  1. Highlighter shade: This shade will go on the lid, is typically shimmery and perfect to accentuate other specific areas such as the inner eye or brow bone.

Tip #5

If your eyeshadow palette doesn’t have a base shade, you can apply a dust of translucent powder to your lids as it will make your eyeshadow blend smoothly.

 Tip #6

I always recommend a standard four eyeshadow palette and stick with neutral colors. For example, earthy tones eye shadows are the best friends for beginners because they make the job so much easier.

Tip #7

As we get older, we won’t need as much frosted and shimmery eyeshadow, we can still enjoy some sparkle but just need to be more mindful of the placement to not accentuate our lines.

Tip #8

Every time you pick up color to apply on your eyes make sure to lightly tap off your brush, that way you don’t bring any excess powder to your face. Always start from the outer corner of your eye to avoid patchiness in the rest of the eyelid in case the eyeshadow is very pigmented. Avoid any harsh lines, blend and blend to keep everything cohesive.

 Tip #9

Where you place your darkest shadow is where you are going to lift the eye, that is to say, keep your darkest color away from your lower lash corner. You don’t want to go too low with your shadow placement. If you do, you will end up dragging your eye down.

Tip #10

Be very mindful of how much product you are applying sometimes Less is More ♡ ̆̈

By having the right tools and a basic palette you can create the most beautiful looks, no need to own every eyeshadow on earth.
