5 Makeup mistakes that will age you
Somebody told me once that when you are young makeup makes you look old and the older you get it’ll make you look even older. Personally, I think that makeup really doesn’t age you, what makes the difference is how you wear it. Tips and tricks that work for us in our early 20’s and 30’s may not work for us later because our skin changes, makeup is all about creating adjustments and finding out what really makes us look and feel our best!
There are so many ways how makeup can work for you and not against you. As a person with a makeup artistry background, here are some ways I have found doesn’t work, especially if you want to look youthful and fresh.
Always first…
If we are going to talk about makeup mistakes let’s start with the care of your natural foundation, if your skin is not properly cleansed and looks tired this will immediately be reflected through your makeup. In this case no matter how much you apply, it just won’t do the trick. Your foundation will not look flawless, and your skin will end up eating all the makeup.
Too much concealer under the eye
You may think that the more concealer the more coverage, this could be true but the more product you use the more creasing and more makeup you will need to take care of. With concealer the amount and shade you use are equally important. My best tip is, only conceal discoloration in the inside corners of your eyes and blemishes if necessary. Be precise, you do not need to lighten the skin that is already the correct color. You can check my blog on How to Wear Concealer for more fun tips about this.
Overdrawn lower eyeliner
Yes, I used to do this a long time ago when I wanted to look a little older, but drawing a line all across the bottom lash line will draw the outer corners down and also give the illusion of a droopy eye. It can also happen with the top lash line if it’s thick.
Use a lighter shade for your bottom lash line and rather than doing your entire lower lash focus more on the outer third and smudge it in to create more balance. I like to use a soft eye kohl pencil or a shadow with a smudger brush to create the lower line. Even if you are using black eyeliner, you want the line to be soft with a diffuse effect.
Tip: if you have small eyes, you can use a cream color pencil on the inner rim or water line, that will act as an eye brightener.
The wrong brow color
By the way this one deserves a whole blog! This is such an important detail, especially if you’re trying to look younger. Believe it or not, one can look older for their bolding eyebrows because brows have the power to change your face. The right color for your brows should be a little lighter than your natural hair so if you changed the color of your hair, consider doing the same for your brows by a professional especially if you went from brunette to blonde. Your brow pencil can match your brow hair color but always start lighter at the inner part and move out darker. Use brow gel to set them in place.
Too much highlighter
I love highlighter but if you use too much it can look very unnatural and give you an opposite result. My best tip is instead of powder find a highlighter in cream. Apply very little on the highest points of your face, such as your brow bone, down the center of the nose and top of the cheek and pad it in, now these are just examples of places you can wear it. However, don’t highlight whatever you don’t want to make more visible.
The whole point of highlighter is to make you look naturally radiant or that glow is part of your skin. A little goes a long way.
Makeup can be your best accessory no matter your age, but makeup is also very personal so if you love the way you do your makeup it’s fine. Keep doing what you do as long as it makes you feel your best.
