How To Prep The Skin Before Makeup
Skin is such a fun topic for me and for this reason my skin care kit is almost as big as my color and complexion kit. Have you ever wondered why makeup doesn’t last on you or maybe doesn’t look flawless?
This is what I do, I always take in consideration the different skin types I work on for the obvious reason that there is not one size fits all. Everybody has different skincare needs and my job is to neutralize the skin so any makeup I apply after is well received to last.
Having good skincare habits will always pay off. You don’t need to waste a lot of money on fancy products or on a 10 step routine, all you need is to use the products that will take care of your skin and make sure it’s cleaned, hydrated and protected before applying makeup.
This is the order I have found works the best in my experience of prepping clients of all different skin types but the following suggestions applies to anybody:
· First step regardless of your type of skin is to remove any of the surface oils, dirt and makeup with a gentle face cleanser that would work best for your skin. You need to make sure that your face is free of impurities before applying any other product. You can find a good guide by clicking “How I remove my makeup and something about me” blog.
· If you don’t exfoliate your skin, you will have a barrier of dead cells that won’t absorb your moisturizer properly and your makeup will start to slide right off.
· Avoid products that contain too much alcohol! It’s incredibly unnecessary and very dehydrating.
Normal skin
1. Toner
2. Lip Mask
3. Serum + Moisturizer
4. Sunscreen
Dry skin
1. A hydrating toner: It could be a hyaluronic based
2. Lip mask
3. Nourishing moisturizer
4. A facial oil on a dry skin feels amazing (optional)
5. Sunscreen
Oily Skin
1. Hydrating toner
2. Lip Mask
3. Oil free moisturizer: For example, a gel cream will balance your skin and gives it hydration without leaving a shiny layer.
4. Light Sunscreen
5. A foundation that is not made for dry skin
Combination Skin (greasier T-zone and dry cheeks)
1. Light hydrating serum
2. Lip Mask
3. Light moisturizer that would work great on combination.
4. Mattifier primer: Use very little in shiny areas.
Or
5. Pore filler: For enlarged pores, only apply it on the area where it’s needed. Don’t overwork this product and never layer on top of another primer.
6. Light Sunscreen
Preparation of the skin is necessary before makeup, so when investing in skincare, let your experience guide you, always treat your skin gently and keep what suits it. The happier your skin, the better your makeup will look.
