How to find your best lip color for your skin toneđź’„
One of the first things I look for before reaching for a lipstick are my clients skin undertones. Now, maybe you wonder what undertones are? It’s the color that doesn’t change and the one that you don’t see at first sight, that tone just under the skin surface. It is usually described as warm, cool or neutral. Sometimes it can be tricky, and this usually happens when you are neutral. Here’s how you can tell if you have a cool, warm or neutral undertone.
Cool Undertones
Hints of bluish, reddish or pink
Look at your veins on the inside of your wrist, if they look more blue or purplish you are on the cool side.
Go near natural daylight, if possible, wear a white towel and put your hair away, if your skin looks more reddish is because you have bluer undertone in your skin.
Warm Undertones
Hints of yellow, orange or gold.
Your veins will rather look greener or olive tone.
With the white towel method if your skin turns yellowish it means you are more on the warm side.
You can also compare your skin with silver or gold metals and notice which one makes your skin look more radiant, check out Discover your True Colors - Rosalia Sewell Makeup for that type of information.
Neutral Undertones
If you can’t tell your undertone after trying those tests or get mixed results in that case, you might be neutral and people with neutral undertones can theoretically wear any color! Lucky you!
What’s the right lipstick color for you?
For cool undertones: pinks, blue reds, clear reds, and burgundies are best! Warm pinks are ok and plums too if they are not too warm.
For warm undertones: peach, warm pinks or coral. Brick red, brownish shades, rust, mocha and all bronze shades.
How do I know if I have the right color?
Observe how this lipstick reveals your skin tone. Make sure you are looking at your face and not just at your lips. If it’s the correct one, it will harmonize your whole face beautifully. You’ll notice very quickly otherwise. I always say to try a color and then try it’s opposite. It’s another way to find yours.
Your personality also has a very important role at the time to choose a lip color. Some people feel more comfortable with soft colors and others with more vivid ones. You can use any lip color from your warm or cool palette, what really makes the difference is the intensity of each one. For example, if you are wearing bold eye makeup, I recommend trying a lighter lipstick that goes with your skin undertone, but if instead you prefer a bold lip color, then wear minimal eye makeup. There are no rules in makeup, but this is a nice way to keep the balance.
Make sure to exfoliate your lips and don’t forget to apply lip balm. 💄
