Let’s Talk Foundation!

Compact powders were produced and really took off in the 1920’s, following by a cream powder called Pan-Cake, and Pan -Stik! Foundation continues to be an essential part of our makeup bag and it comes in many different forms to different needs!! From cream to liquid, compact to lose powder!  The first time I applied some kind of foundation on my face I was at least 14. I remember it was a compact powder which main ingredient was rice, it had a very small powder puff for application and it was a plastic container designed to be discarded once the powder ran out, these were the 1990’s. It was really nothing fancy at all!! Back in the 1950’s no fashion-savvy woman left home without her little and decorative gold compact tucked into her handbag. Compact powders don’t look as eye-catching anymore but in the last 20 years foundation formulas have dramatically improved and there are choices with oil, water based and the most popular of all silicone based that feel weightless and more natural on the skin. Here are some results that you can have with each formula depending on your skin type:

Silicone based foundation: These weightless foundations are great for mattifying and controlling shine. They prolong the longevity of your makeup and protect your skin from outside elements. These are also best suited for wedding ceremonies and other events when your makeup has to last longer!

Water based foundation: the gentlest on your skin if you are prone to breakouts. This is also a good option for dry skin. they melt into your skin easily and look as close to natural as possible.

Oil based foundation: Oil-based foundations are exceptionally rare but these are great for dry skin types. Oil based products take longer to penetrate the skin compared to water-based products.

Compact and loose powders mattify the skin to reduce oily appearance, they are not water-based foundation (it wouldn’t be a powder) but these are great for touch ups throughout the day depending on the needs of the skin or to set the foundation. If you have oily skin, you can benefit from using a powder. Just be sure it's a lightweight product, and only powder the areas that really need it!

Only you know your skin and how it reacts so before you step out to buy a foundation, do your research and decide what base you want in the formula! Always remember that foundation should wear like a second skin.
